The EP is usually named after the best track on it, it seems. French 79 is mostly lower key here; none of the big anthemic hits of his more recent albums. If 79 is a gold medalist at his best in one of France’s greatest exports of the late 20th century—electronica—then this is the silver. But you hear the inklings of the brilliant heights he will reach in Angel, Between the Buttons (which was good enough to be brought back as the opener for the full-length LP Olympic), and Naked City. jammingdevice
A less developed, more tepid French 79. None of these pieces pack his usual punch, with only a cameo of the expected power in the final track. Still, if you’re looking for something…not exactly mellower, but more lukewarm than his characteristic bombast, this is the EP for you. jammingdevice
